Managers

“The overseer must be above reproach as God’s steward, not self-willed […] holding firmly the faithful word … in accordance with the teaching, so that he will be able both to exhort in sound doctrine and to refute those who contradict.”—Titus 1:7, 9 NASB

Many people look at their possessions as if they are owners. They assume their time and resources are their own, and they are free to do and say whatever they want.

The Bible has another perspective. Everything in the world and our lives belongs to God. We see this when Paul wrote that the leaders of the church were to act like God’s “stewards.” The Greek word means being the manager of a household.

We often associate managers with sports or business where people are given the responsibility of managing activities and materials for their organization. But the Bible makes clear that this applies to everything in our lives.

We are God’s managers. He is the owner. He has entrusted us with time, talents, and treasures and wants us to manage them in the same way business owners hire a manager to oversee their resources. Being a good manager was essential if a person wanted to become a leader in the early church.

As you think of your resources, your time, and your very life, realize that everything belongs to God. He has given you responsibilities and called you to be His manager. Seek to manage in ways that would please Him. And think about this question: What does God want you to do with the resources He has entrusted to you?
