Loving God’s Kingdom

“If I forget you, O Jerusalem, may my right hand forget her skill. May my tongue cling to the roof of my mouth if I do not remember you, if I do not exalt Jerusalem above my chief joy.” Psalm 137:5-6 NASB

Timothy Dwight became one of the most influential people in early American history, uniquely demonstrating both intellectual excellence and spiritual commitment.
Born on this day in 1752 in Northampton, Massachusetts, he graduated from Yale College at the age of seventeen. After serving as a chaplain in the American Revolutionary War, he became a minister, farmer, and state legislator.
But he gained his most influence at Yale, first as a faculty member and then its president. While raising academic standards, he also brought a spiritual emphasis that helped spark a revival at colleges throughout America.
Dwight consistently demonstrated that he had the right perspective on life. He demonstrated this perspective in 1797 when he wrote a hymn called “I Love Thy Kingdom, Lord.”
He described how much he loved God’s Kingdom, knowing it was “the house of Thine abode.” How the church was “saved With His own precious blood” and would stand against any attack. To Dwight, God’s Kingdom was his “highest joy” and Jesus was a “Friend divine” who would deliver him from every foe and free him from every snare.
This hymn had a profound impact on the country’s spiritual life, stirring millions to focus on God’s Kingdom.
This hymn continues to have a special meaning in our time. Many people attend church and say that they are Christians, but really don’t love God or His Kingdom. Their lives are cluttered with possessions. They spend their time seeking worldly pleasures. Rather than dedicating their resources to Him, they spend on themselves.
Can you say that you love God’s Kingdom? Do you love Him more than anything or anyone else in the world?

Prayer: Father, I really do love Your Kingdom. I surrender my life to You. Use me to bring the Gospel to the world. I commit my time, talent, and treasure to You. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
