Love, Truth, Justice

The Bible reminds us of the many ways people are motivated – financial gain, recognition, pleasure, attention, meeting needs, or even helping others.

But of all the motivating factors, the Bible stresses the importance of love. This love is a characteristic that should set us apart. As Paul described, without love, great spiritual achievements are meaningless.

God’s love is a powerful motivator! It is not self-centered but generous and giving. It is “patient and kind” (v. 4). It’s never possessive, jealous, boastful, or proud. “It does not demand its own way. It is not irritable, and it keeps no record of being wronged” (v. 5). This love “will last forever” and applies in every situation (v. 8).

It’s listed first among the fruits we receive from the Spirit (Galatians 5:22). It’s a byproduct of God’s supernatural gifts to us.

This love wants to serve God and do the right thing. Those motivated by His love have a passionate commitment to truth. Because they are filled with love, they are troubled when they witness wrongs, when others violate His Word, and when they see people acting unjustly.

During this wonderful Christmas season, we are reminded that God sent Jesus into the world because of His great love for us (John 3:16). His people, too, should be motivated by love and a passionate commitment to truth. We should stand up for justice and fight against any form of injustice.
