Love So Abundant

“The grace of our Lord was exceedingly abundant, with faith and love which are in Christ Jesus.”—1 Timothy 1:14

Like many Americans in the nineteenth century, Grant Colfax Tullar’s life was impacted by the American Civil War. His father was wounded in the Battle of Antietam and was unable to work. While Tullar was a child, his mother died, leading to the split-up of the family. In his youth, he worked in a woolen mill and as a shoe clerk but received no education or training. Tullar had no settled home until he became an adult.

A turning point came at 19 when he came to Christ at a camp meeting. Dedicating his life to Jesus, he became an ordained minister and then a full-time evangelist. Music became increasingly central to his life, and he cofounded a publishing company that published many hymns he wrote.

One hymn was particularly autobiographical. “Love So Abundant” described his gratitude that Jesus changed his life. He had “purchased my pardon, setting me free.” This was an expression of “love so abundant.” In response, “Should I not serve Him, when He so gladly suffered for me?”

It was a joy just to know Jesus. He was his Savior and guarded his footsteps. He was confident Jesus would lead him “out of the darkness into the day.” With Jesus as his “constant companion” and refuge, he felt safe no matter what happened.

Remember that Jesus is with you. He is by your side, right now. He loves you.
