Living for Christ

Daily Devotional2 Minutes

Living for Christ means standing firm in faith like Polycarp—resolving never to compromise, even when the cost is high.

“For to me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain.”—Philippians 1:21 NASB

The writings of Marcus Aurelius are still read and admired. Roman Emperor from 161–180 AD, he was known for having unusual insights. However, throughout his reign, Christians were aggressively persecuted.

One of the most noted martyrs of that time was Polycarp, brought to Rome just before Marcus rose to power. His accuser, the proconsul, urged him, “Change your attitude. Swear, and I will set you free.” But Polycarp would not compromise. He boldly stated, “For 86 years I have been His servant, and He has never done me wrong. How can I blaspheme my King who saved me?”

As the threats continued, Polycarp remained firm: “The fire you threaten burns for a time and is soon extinguished. There is a fire you know nothing about—the fire of the judgment to come.”

As the fire was being prepared for his death, Polycarp prayed, “O Father … I bless thee for counting me worthy of this day and hour, that in the number of the martyrs I may partake of Christ’s cup.” He died a martyr’s death, but his testimony lives on.

Today, thousands of Christians throughout the world are martyred every year. Many others are persecuted. But all of us will be criticized and attacked because of our faith. Every day, we must decide how to respond.

Resolve not to compromise. Stand for Christ. Like Polycarp, make a commitment to serve Jesus as your Lord, no matter the cost.

Reflection Question: What would it look like to live for Christ with bold, uncompromising faith?
