Lifting Up a Standard

Inspiration MinistriesBy Inspiration Ministries2 Minutes

God does not promise that we will be freed from opposition or problems. But He does promise to be with us in every situation, to watch over us, deliver us, provide a way of escape, and give us the wisdom to know what to do and the ability and strength to do it.

We see these principles in His promise to Isaiah. He indicates that there would be times “when the enemy comes in like a flood.” This suggests not just minor opposition, but torrents of problems, as our enemies sweep toward us, seemingly ready to engulf us. In our flesh, we can panic at these moments, overcome with fear and anxiety. We can become discouraged and feel that defeat is inevitable.

But, at times like these, God promises, by His Spirit, to “lift up a standard against” our enemies. The Hebrew word here normally is translated “to flee.” It suggests moving quickly to get to a place of safety. The NASB translates this phrase, “For He will come like a rushing stream which the wind of the LORD drives.”

The idea here is that God promises to attack our enemies on our behalf and provide us with a means of escape—divine intervention! He can act speedily, coming to our aid with spiritual power and energy.

What problems do you face today? Do you feel hopeless? Overwhelmed? Defeated? Discouraged? Remember that God is with you. Remember that He already has declared “the end from the beginning.” His plans will be accomplished (Isaiah 46:9-11). He loves you and has a plan for your life.

Trust in Him. Have faith that He will bring you victory in every situation and work everything together for good.
