Life’s Questions
Thomas said to Him, “Lord, we do not know where You are going, how do we know the way?”—John 14:5 NASB
As Jesus and His 12 disciples gathered to celebrate the Passover, He disclosed revelations about His life and the future. He also assured them not to let their hearts be troubled. He was going to prepare a place for them. Jesus said, “I am coming again and will take you to Myself, so that where I am, there you also will be. And you know the way where I am going” (vs. 3–4).
Questions must have flooded their minds. What exactly did Jesus mean? Others might have pondered these issues, but Thomas was bold enough to ask Jesus what He meant.
Here and throughout John’s Gospel, Thomas appeared fearless and willing to speak when others were timid or afraid. His boldness provided the context for Jesus to give a statement central to the Gospel: “I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father except through Me” (v. 6).
The disciples often seemed reluctant to respond when Jesus said something they didn’t understand. But Thomas was willing to ask questions. From his example, we see that Jesus doesn’t get angry or reject us if we ask questions. These can open the door for life-changing revelations and insights that we would not receive any other way.
