Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence

The music of Christmas rings throughout centuries. Classic carols and hymns remind us of the timelessness of the Gospel. How the birth of Jesus has impacted men and women across borders and generations. Much of this music focuses on celebration and festive feelings. But one special carol reminds us that this also is a time for sober reflection.

The song, “Let All Mortal Flesh Keep Silence,” has its roots in the fourth century. Its words are based on the Liturgy of St. James, an order of service developed in Jerusalem (and once thought to have been developed by James, the brother of Jesus). These words were designed to lead Believers into a time of communion by helping to prepare their hearts to be right with God.

To some people, Christmas often is just an excuse for escape and revelry. But this song helps us think about the fact that we are to stand before Jesus “with fear and trembling.” That we all must pay homage to Him! That He was the “King of kings” and “Lord of lords.” That He was God incarnate, yet came to earth and became a man, “born of Mary.” What a mystery!

His birth made cosmic impact and changed the course of history. He came to vanquish the “powers of hell” and clear away the darkness from our lives. It was a moment of unprecedented praise as the heavenly host came to earth to announce the Good News.

This Christmas season, as you celebrate the birth of Jesus, ponder the fact that He is the King of Kings and Lord of Lords. Don’t take Him for granted. Prepare your heart for intimate moments with your risen Savior. Like the wise men, bow before Him. Enter His presence with reverence and worship. Honor and glorify Him. Praise His name.
