Labor and Rest

These were foundational principles of creation. The importance of work. And rest. And the balance between them.

The Bible opens with examples of God at work. We seek Him creating. Active. Speaking the universe into existence. Concerned about every detail. He was providing the model for us to follow, for we are to approach life with this same kind of creative energy in the opportunities He provides. To be generous and active. Not idle or wasteful.

We are to realize that each of us has been given specific gifts and talents, and special assignments and opportunities. He calls us to good stewards, never wasting these gifts. Taking advantage of every opportunity. Investing and using the resources we have been given. Always doing everything as unto Him. Always committed to excellence.

In the early church, some did not apply these principles. Some, in fact, were lazy. Not willing to do their part. As Paul stated clearly, this attitude was not acceptable: “If anyone is not willing to work, then he is not to eat, either” (2 Thessalonians 3:10).

But the Bible also reminds us of the importance of balance. Not to be obsessive, or become workaholics. This is why God also reminded us of the importance of rest. To be diligent in our work, but then to take time to stop and rest. He even designated a specific day every week for rest. And He provided Jubilee years and other opportunities for rest.

In your life, make sure that you are being a faithful steward. Investing your resources. Being accountable and diligent. But also remember the importance of rest. Ultimately trusting in God.
