Know Yourself
If he would take his rod away from me and not let dread of him terrify me, then I would speak without fear of him, for I know I am not what I am thought to be.—Job 9:34–35 NRSVUE
After being struck by adversity, Job became obsessed with proving his own innocence. Yet it seemed impossible to defend himself. He asked how any person could be just before God (v. 2).
Job knew God was powerful but did not know how to interact with Him on a personal level: “He passes by me, and I do not see Him” (v. 11).
He felt helpless: “Though I am innocent, I cannot answer Him.” If God called, “I do not believe that he would listen to my voice” (vs. 15–16). Job felt there was no way to answer God because “there is no mediator between us,” since the Holy Spirit had not yet been revealed (v. 33).
Like Job, it can be natural to feel defensive and justify ourselves. But it is important to start with a personal relationship with God, stay humble, and realize He knows us better than we know ourselves.
David knew God had searched him. He knew each word even before it was spoken. He saw his entire life and knew what was best. Job might have challenged God, but David humbled himself, crying out, “Search me, O God, and know my heart; test me and know my thoughts” (Psalm 139:23).
What is your attitude toward the challenges you face? Recommit your life to serving God. Focus on worship and prayer. Have faith in Him. Trust Him.
