Joy and Awe

“Fire came out from before the LORD and consumed the burnt offering and the fat on the altar. When all the people saw it, they shouted and fell on their faces.”- Leviticus 9:24 NKJV

The Israelites witnessed something truly amazing, as fire came from before the Lord and consumed their offerings. In this overwhelming moment they could not contain their delight. They were not just happy, but “shouted with joy.” These were deep feelings, bubbling from within them, flowing out into their lives. And they joined together as individuals but also as part of the same community.

Together they had witnessed God’s presence in a powerful way. They saw that He was real, and on their side. He had proven that He kept His Word, and really was with them. Knowing that He was present, they had no reason to fear. Who could harm them? What need could He not supply?

After their shouts died down, they seemed to realize the awesomeness of what they had just witnessed. This was no superstition or feeling. They had encountered God, and seen a glimpse of His glory. They “fell on their faces” and “bowed facedown on the ground,” humbly aware of His greatness, acutely conscious of their frailties and inadequacy.

How rarely people in our materialistic culture have such experiences with God. How many just think about religion. About rituals and rules. But everything changes when we have a personal encounter with Him. When we get this kind of glimpse of His glory.

How amazing to realize that He longs to make Himself known to us. To fellowship with us as individuals. That He delights to fill us with joy. That He is by our side in every situation. That He longs to bless us in powerful ways. To protect us and provide everything we need. To give us real freedom.

In your life, seek to deepen your personal relationship with God.

Prayer: Father, I bow down before You. I praise and worship You. I am in awe of Your power. I am overwhelmed that You really care for me. Help me to know You better. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
