Jesus, I Come to Thee

William Sleeper spent much of his adult life involved in home ministry, besides pastoring a church in Worcester, Massachusetts, for more than 30 years. This experience gave him great insights into the practical problems people faced, and how Jesus solved them.

Born on this day in 1819 in Danbury, New Hampshire, he wrote a hymn about our need to depend on Jesus. He wrote, “Out of my bondage, sorrow, and night, Jesus, I come.” He knew that we come to Jesus for “freedom, gladness, and light.”

Sleeper knew that Jesus can provide for our every need: “Out of my sickness, into Thy health, out of my want and into Thy wealth, out of my sin and into Thyself.”

When we come to Jesus, He can bring us “out of earth’s sorrows into Thy balm, out of life’s storms and into Thy calm, out of distress to jubilant psalm.” He can deliver us from fear and the depths of despair, and bring us joy and light.

As an example, we just need to think about those two blind men who called out to Jesus. They kept calling out, believing that He could heal them. He rewarded their faith and persistence, and touched their eyes. Suddenly, they could see.

Today, you can come to Jesus with the problems you face. Do you need health or healing? Are you afraid or anxious? Is your heart filled with uncertainty or turmoil? Have you experienced failure or loss? Right now, come to Jesus. Cry out to Him. He will answer and provide for your needs.
