Investigation

The Bible’s account of the birth of Jesus brings us face to face with two contrasting aspects of our faith. We see these equally important elements in the opening words of Luke’s Gospel.

The first is the importance of traditions and other things passed down from previous generations. In Luke’s account, these things had been “delivered” (v. 2 NKJV). Events that others found important. Insights and warnings from their experiences.

The Christmas season annually reminds us of the wealth of traditions associated with Jesus’ birth. Special days and holidays. Special celebrations and services. Special music and customs. Sharing the memories of cultures and families.

But Luke also reminds us of a second approach to this season: the importance of a personal investigation. He provided an example to follow with a determination to learn everything he could about the birth of Jesus. What really took place? Who were the people? What did the prophets really say? What words were spoken?

His goal? So his readers would “know the certainty of the things you have been taught” (v. 4). He was providing an example of the importance of investigation. To go on a personal journey of prayer and study, to make sure that their faith wasn’t just based on what they had been told, but also things they personally knew to be true.

This season, while celebrating the amazing traditions associated with Jesus’ birth, don’t stop there. Follow Luke’s example: Investigate. Read the accounts. Study. Pray. Seek God’s insights. Know the truth in your heart.
