God has given each Believer the privilege and responsibility of being an intercessor. This is our wonderful opportunity to approach God on behalf of others who are in need. This was central to Paul’s encouragement to Timothy: As Believers we are to intercede “for all men, for kings and all who are in authority” (1 Timothy 2:1-2).

But there is another side to intercession. The Bible tells us that Jesus, as our great high priest, “always lives to make intercession” for those who are saved (Hebrews 7:23-25). In Romans 8:26-27, we’re told that the Holy Spirit is also our intercessor: “He makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God.”

As we have needs, as we face problems, when we don’t know what to do or “what we should pray for,” God wants us to learn to acknowledge and depend on the Holy Spirit’s work in our lives. He has given us the opportunity to pray in the Spirit, depend on the Spirit, and trust in the Spirit.

When we do this, we are allowing Him to accomplish His full intercessory work in our lives. And we also need to recognize that God has called us to intercede for others.

Today, remember the two sides of intercession. As you face needs, remember that Jesus is making intercession for you and that the Holy Spirit is always available to help you pray. Allow the Spirit to search your heart and mind that He might make intercession for you according to the will of God. Also, ask God to show you how you can be an intercessor for others!
