Humble and Hungry for God

Matthew Henry was born on this day in 1662. As a child, he and his family gathered together for daily devotions, when his father taught on a passage and the children were encouraged to write their own accounts. One day, when his father spoke about Psalm 51, Henry decided “to inquire after Christ.”

His life became transformed by his commitment to God. As a young man, he frequently gathered with friends for prayer and Bible study, and he later became a minister. Demonstrating his passion and commitment, it is said that in public services he usually prayed for half an hour and preached for an hour.

We see the commitment of his heart as he considered his life on New Year’s Day in 1704. He wrote, “Upon my knees [I] made a fresh surrender of myself, my whole self, all I am, all I have, all I can do, to God the Father, Son, and Holy Ghost, my Creator, Owner, Ruler, and Benefactor.” He went on to write, I “commit myself entirely to Him.”

Henry never forgot the importance of humility before God. He dedicated his life to studying God’s Word, and he went on to write what may be the most widely used Bible commentary, even today.

God is looking for people with that same kind of humility and dedication to His Word—those who will not compromise, but are entirely committed to His Kingdom.

Dedicate yourself to the Lord right now. Then watch to see how He blesses you, now and into eternity.
