Humility

Imagine that you could do anything. That there were no limits to your power. That your authority extended to everything and everyone. What would you do?

Perhaps the normal response would be to indulge in personal pleasures. To take advantage of these privileges. To make extravagant purchases. To live a life of ease.

These, in fact, were the kind of choices presented to Jesus. The Bible declares that all things are “in subjection under” Jesus (Hebrews 2:8). In fact, He could have done anything with this authority. Instead of using this for His own benefit, He humbled Himself.

He was made lower than the angels. He suffered death and experienced the full panorama of life, with all of its trials and problems. He was crowned with glory and honor, but only after His death. And He gave His life that He could bring “many sons to glory.”

The Bible tells us that, even though Jesus was “in the form of God, [He] did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, but made Himself of no reputation.” He became a bondservant, and “humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross” (Philippians 2:6-11).

Jesus provides our example for the kind of attitude God wants us to have in every situation. No matter what our reputation or accomplishments, our rank or skills, we need to practice humility. We need to reject pride and focus on serving others, and bringing souls into His Kingdom.

Today, remember that God called you to be like Jesus. To humble yourself and seek to be His servant. To be a faithful steward of the time, talent, and treasure you have been given.
