Hubris

For many ancient Greeks, it was thought to be among the greatest of all flaws. A characteristic that would ultimately lead to downfall and defeat. This was “hubris.”

While the original meaning had other connotations, for the Greeks this word came to summarize what it meant to be guilty of excessive pride. Aristotle and many leading Greek thinkers warned about its dangers. It was thought to be such a serious offense that a person considered guilty of hubris actually could be penalized under Greek law, even to the point of death.

Centuries before these Greeks recognized these dangers, the Bible warned about the ways pride can ruin our lives. Pride can develop when we focus on ourselves and elevate our own interest and pleasures above God. It can develop when we seek glory and honor for ourselves, when we take credit for our accomplishments, and when we exclude Him from our thoughts.

In the moment, pride may seem justified. But the Bible warns that these apparent benefits are deceptive. In fact, “Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall” (Proverbs 16:18). We also are warned that God hates pride, and everything associated with it (Proverbs 8:13).

It is this kind of pride that was the downfall of many in the Bible. In particular, God declared that He hated the pride that had characterized His people. He hated when they ignored Him and trusted in their own strength, resources, and ideas.

This kind of pride has been the downfall of many men and women throughout history. It can impact and influence anyone, even mature believers.

What is the answer? Absolute humility before God. Always being careful to give Him all the glory and honor. Surrendering our lives to Him. Having the attitude of a servant in everything.
