Good Soldiers

What does it take to be good soldiers? George Washington observed that “discipline is the soul of an army.” In orders written in 1777, he described how discipline was essential to victory. He warned that “nothing can be more hurtful to the service, than the neglect of discipline.”

Many leaders throughout time have confirmed that discipline is the heart of soldiers “in active service.” These soldiers submit completely to their commanding officer, realizing they must coordinate actions precisely with other soldiers. The only way to be protected, supplied, and successful is to act as a unit, recognizing that distractions can be fatal and lead to defeat.

Soldiers can expect opposition but, if they are “good,” they will not give up or be discouraged, but follow their commander, and remain focused and disciplined.

The Bible tells us that we should be like these good soldiers. We must be committed to God, our commanding officer. We must be submitted to Him, and lead a life of discipline, commitment, and focus. We must fulfill our place in the Body of Christ, and get our nourishment, direction, and protection from Him. And, we cannot afford to be entangled “in the affairs of everyday life.”

Like soldiers, we can expect spiritual opposition. The devil and his demons are at war with us, seeking to sow confusion. They want us worried, afraid, and discouraged. We also face opposition from the flesh and the world, which are in conflict with our spiritual nature.

Today, remember that you are in the winning army. Do not be distracted or discouraged. Commit yourself to be a good soldier, actively serving God and His Kingdom. Believe Him for victory.
