God’s Sure Word

“The sky and the earth (the universe, the world) will pass away, but My words will not pass away.” Luke 21:33 Amplified Bible

In recent years, some skeptics have suggested that many Bible characters never existed. One archeologist speculated that David and Goliath were invented in stories told “in the evening by the fire.” In fact, some doubters feel that the whole Bible is just a collection of myths and stories. Yet how ironic that discovery after discovery proves that the Bible really is true.

These prejudices were challenged by the discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls. It was on this day in 1947 when E. L. Sukenik of the Hebrew University in Jerusalem first received word of the existence of these scrolls, which had been found by accident by two bedouin shepherds in caves near the Dead Sea. These were a collection of Hebrew and Aramaic manuscripts that had been collected between 200 BC and AD 70 by a previously unknown Jewish group.

The scrolls include manuals of discipline, hymn books, commentaries, and writings. It included two of the oldest known copies of the Book of Isaiah (that were almost complete) and fragments of every book in the Old Testament except Esther.

Those who lived by faith did not need the assurance provided by these scrolls, but this discovery was a reminder that God’s Word is not an invention or a collection of fiction or myths. Regardless of the opinions of skeptics, His Word is sure and timeless. It is true today, just as it was thousands of years ago.

Jesus said that conditions in the world might change. Trends and fashions may come and go. Nations and leaders might rise and fall. But His words “will not pass away.”

Today, do not place your confidence in your job, the economy, your friends or family, or anything else in the world. Instead, trust God’s Word. It is sure and dependable. It can change your life.

Prayer: Father, thank You that Your Word is true. Deliver me from a dependence on the things of this world. I place my trust and confidence in You. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
