God’s Representative

Even in uncertain times, God raises up His representatives to conduct His purposes with boldness, authority, and peace.

“I am going to shake the heavens and the earth. And I will overthrow the thrones of kingdoms and destroy the power of the kingdoms … Zerubbabel … I will make you like a signet ring, for I have chosen you.”—Haggai 2:21–23 NASB

God’s people had every reason to feel defeated and discouraged. They appeared to be helpless. The Temple and the walls of Jerusalem had been destroyed. Many people had been taken into exile.

But God told His people to “take courage” and remember: “My Spirit remains in your midst; do not fear!” (vs. 4–5). The Lord would fulfill His plans and overrule the purposes of men and nations. He would “shake the heavens and the earth.”

God declared that He would shape the destiny of the world’s wealth and redirect it into His house. His house would be filled with glory, and people would come to understand that everything belongs to Him: “The silver is Mine and the gold is Mine” (vs. 8–9).

The Lord promised to accomplish great things for His people. Behind the scenes, He was shaping history and destroying “the power of the kingdoms.”

God would accomplish His purposes through His people. He specifically chose Zerubbabel to be His servant to be like a “signet ring.” Used like an identity card, this ring meant that Zerubbabel represented God Himself and was authorized to act in His name.

God’s message of peace and comfort is still true today. Trust in Him. Commit yourself to be His servant. Rather than being discouraged or afraid, be ready to act boldly in His name. Use the power and authority God’s given you to accomplish His purposes!
