God’s Protection

David was a mighty warrior who fought many battles. Yet he also had a tender heart. Here, for example, we see him crying out to God for protection and vindication in emotional terms.

God is the “Savior of those who take refuge at Your right hand from those who rise up against them” (v. 7). Wanting reassurance of how much God loved him, David prayed, “Keep me as the apple of the eye.” He prayed that God would hide him “in the shadow of Your wings from the wicked who despoil me” (v. 9).

While knowing that God cared for him, he faced the reality of people who were boastful and arrogant, and had an “unfeeling heart” (v.10). He felt surrounded and sensed that they were “like a lion that is eager to tear, and as a young lion lurking in hiding places” (v. 12). It would be easy to be afraid or discouraged. Yet, through every trouble, David depended upon God.

The Bible urges us to realize that God is with us, no matter what others may say or do or what situations we face. Each of us can take refuge in His hands.

Picture yourself as the apple of His eye. You, too, can hide in the shadow of His wings. You can make God your refuge and strength (Psalm 46:1). You can rest in Him and trust Him. You can be confident and at peace.
