God’s Presence

The man we know as “Brother Lawrence” had made a startling breakthrough. And, for more than three hundred years, his insights have inspired people through his book, The Practice of the Presence of God. This summarized the joy that he experienced by spending time with God, and talking with Him.

He wrote, “There is not in the world a kind of life more sweet and delightful than that of a continual conversation with God. Only those can comprehend it who practice and experience it.”

He found that when we faithfully “keep ourselves in His holy presence, and set Him always before us, this hinders our offending Him, and doing anything that may displease Him.” As we spend time with God, we have “a holy freedom” and know Him so personally that we are confident that He can supply the grace we need.

He realized that we need new habits and must develop an attitude that focuses on Him: “Over time, by often repeating these acts, they become habitual, and the presence of God becomes quite natural to us.” We discover that God really is with us. We constantly can speak with Him, no matter what we are going through. We always can call on Him and listen to His voice.

Today, dare to practice the presence of God in your life. You can be confident that He is with you. You can speak with Him, right now, or anytime. Calm your heart and mind, and focus on Him. Allow His peace to fill your heart, and His Spirit to guide you.
