God’s Masterpiece

“We are God’s masterpiece. He has created us anew in Christ Jesus, so we can do the good things he planned for us long ago.” Ephesians 2:10 NASB

What is a “masterpiece”? For centuries, in the world of art, this question has sparked debate for everyone from novices to experts. Recently, for example, the Louvre in Paris, perhaps the world’s most famous art gallery, asked its curators to define a “masterpiece.” The responses were a puzzling mixture, with different answers, representing many different perspectives.

Some felt that craftsmanship and design skills were the most important element. Others focused on forms and originality, size and color. Yet, even among these experts, there was no clear consensus.

Describing their conclusions, the Louvre director observed, “It became evident that it is extremely difficult, if not impossible, to articulate a definition of masterpiece that could be accepted universally.” There were no guarantees or magic formulas.

In many ways, our lives are like paintings in an art gallery, looked on differently by different observers. But there is one major difference: As the Bible tells us, each of us is “God’s masterpiece.” There are no mistakes. His designs are perfect. Each of us is unique, special, and loved. And He has a unique purpose for each person.

But each of us has the choice of how we respond to God’s work in our lives. Some rebel and go their own way, refusing to cooperate with Him, thinking they know better than their Creator. But others recognize that serving God is the key to fulfillment. That He understands us better than we understand ourselves. That He actually has a unique plan and purpose for each person. That He is ready to shape and mold us into His masterpiece.

In your life, remember that God is your creator. Cooperate with Him. Submit your life to Him. Let Him direct your life, and make you into the “masterpiece” for which you are designed.

Prayer: Father, thank You for Your design on my life. Thank You for wanting to make my life a “masterpiece.” Mold me. Make me. Fulfill Your purposes for me. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
