Giving Willingly and Freely

The tabernacle was built in a wilderness by exiles with no permanent homes. It would have been understandable if they had been protective of their possessions, wanting to hold on to their limited resources.

Yet in this isolated location, they responded to Moses’ call and brought rare and often expensive materials for the tabernacle. No one was forced to give. They brought these as offerings to God, who made it clear that He only wanted people to give who would give “willingly and ungrudgingly,” with their hearts.

With these voluntary contributions, they built a spectacular sanctuary for God. This was a remarkable accomplishment! But this also demonstrated what could be done by people whose hearts were committed to serve God, and would give willingly of themselves to His work.

Today, God looks for people who have this same kind of commitment, who are willing to give of their time, talent, and treasure, and do so willingly and freely. Such people must want to serve God, and use what He has given them to accomplish His work.

He does not want us to give “grudgingly” for “God loves a cheerful giver” (2 Corinthians 9:7). To fully understand this principle, remember that the word translated “cheerful” is the source of our English word, “hilarious.” God loves those who give out of overwhelming joy!

Today, remember that you demonstrate your commitment to God by what you do with your resources. Do you give grudgingly? Or willingly?

Think about how much God has done for you. Allow your heart to be filled with gratitude and gratefulness for His blessings. Let Him show you how you can use the resources He has given you to bless others and further His Kingdom.
