Giving as Worship

In a famous prayer written in the 13th century, St. Francis of Assisi observed that “it is in giving that we receive.” Many people understand the importance of giving. In fact, giving and receiving gifts dominate the Christmas season for many people. But few seem to understand the importance of selfless giving.

Our modern tradition of giving began with the wise men who followed the star to find a King. We can picture these men, accustomed to lives of splendor, presenting gifts to a mere child, in a humble setting. These were gifts that had come from “their treasures.” Each specially chosen. Gold, frankincense, and myrrh, costly items which they had brought on their journey across hundreds of miles.

These gifts also were given as an act of worship. They gave not to each other, but to Jesus. Their focus was not on themselves, but on Him! They did not seek to receive anything, or any rewards. In fact, before “opening their treasures,” they “fell down and worshiped” Jesus. Their gifts were in the spirit of worship.

After the gifts had been given, these men went on their way. Their journey had been complete. They had seen the King and given Him gifts. And they had worshipped at His feet.

During the Christmas season, and throughout the year, we need to remember that “it is in giving that we receive.” That “God loves a cheerful giver” (2 Corinthians 9:7).

Today, remember that God deserves your best, during the Christmas season, throughout the coming year, and every day of your life. Focus on Him. Make an offering to Him, of your life and resources. And give Him the praise and worship.
