Getting into the Flow

Today many in the church celebrate the day the Holy Spirit fell on the disciples in the Upper Room (Acts 2). While celebrating this event, some will wonder why their lives do not seem to have the kind of power displayed that day. The answer? Like those first century believers, they need to be filled with the Spirit.

Jesus had promised that out of the heart of all who believe in Him would “flow rivers of living water.” John added that “He spoke concerning the Spirit.” The picture of a river should help us see how God wants His Spirit to flow in our lives.

In Jesus’ life, the Spirit flowed naturally, all the time, without limits. A woman merely touched the hem of His garment and was healed. He merely spoke the word and demons were cast out and miracles took place.

After the Spirit fell, this same power flowed through the disciples. People were healed by Peter’s shadow (Acts 5:15). Handkerchiefs that just touched Paul had power to do “unusual miracles” (Acts 19:11-12).

Like a mighty river, the living waters of the Spirit are available to flow through you as well. Make sure you have confessed your sins, that you are right with God, and that everything that might block the Spirit is removed.

Fill your mind with God’s Word, and put the Word into practice. Spend quality time with Him. Remember that you need to be connected with your power source (John 15:1-7). And be filled with His Spirit. Let Him flood your life so more of His blessings and power might flow through you.
