Freedom and Initiative

Soon after entering Judea, Jesus was met by a young man who owned much property. He also was a “ruler” (Luke 18:18). Demonstrating real sincerity, the man was filled with questions, specifically wondering how to “obtain” eternal life. The Greek here uses a word of possession, not of character. The man seemed interested in what he could obtain, not about changing his life.

Through His response, Jesus demonstrated the importance of the freedoms God gives us. Yes, He wanted the best for this man but He gave him the freedom to respond. The answer was not in what he could “obtain” but what was in his heart. Was he willing to give up everything to follow Jesus?

The man had shown initiative. Seeking Jesus. Asking good questions. But how would he respond? The man decided that he could not do what Jesus asked, and “went away grieving.” But this was his choice.

As he went on with his life, we only can imagine what happened to him. Did he ever reflect back on what Jesus had said, and his response? We wonder about his life as a “ruler.” Was he one of the “rulers” who sneered at Jesus (Luke 23:35) or who “crucified Him” (Luke 24:20)?

In your life, remember that Jesus offers you choices. He desires that you deny yourself, take up your cross, and follow Him (Matthew 16:24). But the choice is up to you. Will you seek Him for direction and wisdom? Will you show initiative? Will you study His Word and pray?

What choices will you make today?
