Following a Majority

“You shall not follow a crowd to do evil; nor shall you testify in a dispute so as to turn aside after many to pervert justice. You shall not show partiality to a poor man in his dispute.”—Exodus 23:2–3 NKJV

Perhaps no organization has been so committed to measuring public opinions as the Gallup Organization. As part of their process, the Gallup Poll has become part of the American lexicon, measuring trends on subjects ranging from politics to fashion.

Gallup uses a methodology called sampling. Through this process, they first determine the opinions of a relatively small group of people. Then these views are scientifically projected to a larger group. The theory behind this research is that sampling enables researchers to project the views of entire population groups. Out of these polls come reports that reveal what the majority is thinking.

However, even an organization as technologically advanced as Gallup finds itself confronted by research information that can be confusing. They sometimes reach conclusions that may prove to be inaccurate.

God warns that, regardless of methodology, a majority can be wrong. Realize that people are fickle. They change their minds. It can be easy to follow a majority and go along with the crowd. It takes courage to stand alone and a real commitment to follow the timeless Word of God.

In the important issues of life, seek to be committed to follow God. Pray and study His Word. Remember that all things are subject to change and the whims of human emotions and flawed human reasoning. Focus on God and His Word, regardless of what is going on around you.
