Flattery or Faithfulness?

It is a scene repeated in courtrooms, films, and programs. An articulate attorney stands before a jury, arguing his case, seeking to shape how they look at the evidence and applying his experience and skills to generate desired conclusions.

Applying similar principles, politicians argue about policy issues, seeking to win elections and sway public sentiment. Advertisements attempt to influence behavior. Salespeople present their products.

There are many motivations for these activities. Some are sincere, but others are deceitful, manipulative, and riddled with falsehood.

For many, success means swaying an audience, securing a victorious verdict, defeating an adversary, making the sale. Winning at any cost becomes the most important goal, even if it means twisting or ignoring the rules and forgetting about godliness and God’s standards.

David observed how many people seemed dominated by falsehood with lives characterized by flattery, deception, and “sweet-talking lips” (VOICE). Fewer cared about godliness or truth but only about winning. Facing these challenges, David appealed to God.

Ultimately, he realized that some may “strut about” and act in arrogant ways. But David could trust in God. He would stay committed to Him. His words were totally pure, “as silver tried in a furnace on the earth, refined seven times.”

Make a firm commitment to stand on God’s Word. Don’t compromise or act arrogantly.
