Finding Peace in the Midst of Chaos

See how finding peace in the midst of chaos reflects the faith of Kansas pioneers and the promise of Jesus that true peace is found in Him, even in the middle of life’s storms.

“I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world” (John 16:33).

Even before becoming a state, Kansas was a battleground. Conflict began after the US Congress passed the Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1854. This established that Kansas would become a state, but also announced that its citizens would determine if Kansas would ban or allow slavery, a subject of passionate disagreement.

In the following years, Kansas was flooded with both antislavery and proslavery forces. The violence was so constant that the state became known as “Bloody Kansas.”

During these uncertain times, other pioneers moved into Kansas simply looking for a new home. Many of these settlers realized they could only survive with God’s help.

Christine Hokanson, one of the women who settled in Kansas during this time, expressed the sentiment of many settlers when she wrote, “How grateful we are to God.” To her, this was a “wonderful country of the brave and the free.” She testified that God “helped and guided us through the struggles … of the pioneer days.” She prayed for God’s “rich blessings” to “rest on the coming generations as it was rested on the pioneers.”

In an environment where violence seemed everywhere, pioneers like Christine Hokanson could declare that God was faithful. Thankfully, God’s faithfulness didn’t stop with the Kansas pioneers. His incredible promises are for all who seek Him and trust in Him.
