Famine

Daily Devotional3 Minutes

What if the scarcest thing in your life became God’s Word? Amos warned of a famine—not of bread, but of hearing from God—and why not to wait to feast on it.

“Behold, the days are coming … when I will send a famine on the land … of hearing the words of the Lord. They shall … run to and fro, to seek the word of the Lord, but they shall not find it” (Amos 8:11–12).

Faced with the devastating consequences of famine, people can become desperate. The children of Israel faced such conditions after they departed from Egypt. Thinking about the food they left behind, they began complaining.

But God challenged them to walk by faith and trust in Him. He rained “bread from heaven” (Exodus 16:4), giving them manna that provided daily nourishment for 40 years.

Later, Moses reminded them of that experience, explaining that God had humbled them and “let you hunger.” He fed them with manna to “make you know that man does not live by bread alone, but … by every word that comes from the mouth of the Lord” (Deuteronomy 8:3). Jesus cited these words when He was tempted by the devil (Matthew 4:4). How much we need God’s Word!

During the time of Amos, God’s people were ignoring His Word, but they would pay a price: When they faced problems, though they turned to God, it would be too late. They would realize just how much they needed His guidance and wisdom, direction and protection. But they would experience a famine of hearing His Word.

Many people take God’s Word for granted. They ignore His warnings and violate His principles. He warns that the days will come when they desperately need His Word yet will not be able to find it. Don’t wait for a crisis before you seek God. Fill your life with His Word today.

Reflection Question: Are you starved for God’s Word or filling up daily?

Frequently Asked Questions

What was unusual about the famine Amos prophesied?

It was “not a famine of bread … but of hearing the words of the LORD.” When people persistently reject God’s message, a time can come when guidance falls silent—a judgment more severe than physical hunger.

How does Jesus’ reply to temptation connect to Amos’ warning (Matthew 4:4)?

Quoting Deuteronomy 8:3, Jesus said man lives “by every word that comes from the mouth of God.” Both passages teach that God’s Word is essential nourishment — a truth Amos’ famine dramatizes.
