Faith

Daily Devotional2 Minutes

Have a need? It’s time to sow a seed in faith.

“Therefore be patient, brothers and sisters, until the coming of the Lord. The farmer waits for the precious produce of the soil, being patient about it, until it gets the early and late rains.”James 5:7 NASB

Today, reproductions of The Angelus, a painting by Jean-Francois Millet, are found in millions of homes around the world. Yet his name is comparatively unknown, and few even know the name of the painting. Even so, people are inspired by its image as it appears on items such as calendars, prints, and plates.

Born in 1814 near the northwest coast of France, Millet had a difficult life. After his first wife died, he married again and had several children. He and his family often struggled, experiencing hunger and financial problems. Yet Millet slowly gained respect as an artist, typically being inspired by pastoral scenes and the life of common people.

The Angelus, finalized in 1859, moves us with its subject matter: a man and woman standing alone in a field, hands folded in prayer. They have sown their seeds; now all they can do is trust in God for the results.

Why is this painting so moving? Ultimately, we all must look at our lives in the same way as this French couple. No matter our field of endeavor, God calls us to do our part—to sow seeds with the resources He’s given us. But for the results, we must trust Him.

Whatever you need today, be sure to do your part. Sow seeds with the time, talents, and treasures God has given you. Then pray. Have faith! Trust God for the harvest you need!

Reflection Question: What need are you bringing to your Heavenly Father today?
