Dry Bones

Daily Devotional2 Minutes

God’s vision of dry bones in Ezekiel reminds us that even what seems lifeless can be revived—because His promises never fail.

“He … set me down in the middle of the valley; and it was full of bones … This is what the LORD God says to these bones, ‘Behold, I am going to make breath enter you so that you may come to life.’”—Ezekiel 37:1–6 NASB

It was a dark time for God’s people. Many had been exiled and were feeling hopeless. The Temple had been destroyed and its treasures taken.

But then God gave Ezekiel a startling vision: Bringing him to a valley full of dry bones, the Lord told Ezekiel that these bones would be given new life, and He would “make flesh grow back on [them], cover [them] with skin” (v. 6).

Then God breathed on these bodies, and they “came to life and stood on their feet.” Moreover, they became “an exceedingly great army” (v. 10). God explained that “these bones are the whole house of Israel” (v. 11). He said they would “come up out of [their] graves … come to life,” and be placed “on [their] own land” (vs. 12–14).

For centuries, these prophecies remained a mystery. Many asked, “Will God actually bring His people into the land of Israel again?” This seemed impossible.

Yet in the 20th century, this is exactly what happened. The world watched with amazement as Jews came from across the globe and were united in the land of Israel. Yes, God’s Word is true!

Just as these dry bones have come back to life, we can be sure that all the Bible’s prophecies for Israel will be fulfilled. People in the world may doubt God’s Word or have their own interpretations. But we can be sure God will keep His promises—all of them.

Reflection Question: Where in your life are you trusting God to breathe new life?

Prayer
Father, thank You that Your prophetic Word is true. Bless Your people Israel, and help me trust Your promises in my own life. In Jesus’ name, amen.
