Down Time

“Be careful how you walk, not as unwise men but as wise, making the most of your time, because the days are evil.” Ephesians 5:15 NASB

Orville Wright was close to death. It was 1896, and he was only twenty-five years old. But after contracting typhoid, his condition rapidly deteriorated. As his temperature reached 105 degrees, he lapsed into a kind of delirium. His doctor said that little could be done.

Gradually, his temperature diminished and he began to regain health. But it took weeks before he could even sit up in bed. This might have seemed like a useless time. Yet what he did during this “down time” changed his life, and the world.

While Orville was confined to bed, his brother, Wilbur, began reading aloud about the German glider enthusiast Otto Lilienthal. What they read inspired them but also provided vital clues to the secrets of air travel. And the two brothers were destined to be the first people to develop a heavier-than-air craft, and fly it. What we call an airplane.

When they succeeded, they specifically pointed to the inspiration Lilienthal provided. He had “infected” them with his “unquenchable enthusiasm,” and inspired them to go beyond curiosity, and actively pursue the dream of developing a flying machine. And they received that inspiration at a time when it seemed that nothing positive could happen.

What do we do in our “down” moments? When it seems that “nothing” is happening and nothing constructive seems possible? As the Wright brothers learned, these moments can be life-changing. Moments to dig deeper. To explore.

From a Biblical perspective, these can be moments for spiritual breakthroughs. For God to teach us new things. To point us in new directions. To open new doors for ministry.

In your life, remember that there are no “down” times with God. He is always with you, and always ready to fellowship with you. Today, quiet yourself before Him. Pray and listen to His Spirit. Ask Him to open your eyes and give you new understanding.

Prayer: Father, I commit this day to You. Open my eyes to see more of Your truth. Remind me of Your presence. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
