Does Anyone Understand?

The question was simple: Does anyone really understand? The Hebrew word suggests a level of intelligence. Acting with insights. Really grasping the issues, and acting with prudence.

We might assume that this applies to non-believers. But the Bible says that “every one” has turned aside. The Hebrew word indicates that this really means everyone. All of us.

In short, the Bible reminds us of our human limits. No matter how smart we may think we are, there is so much we don’t know. We may have been a believer for years. But the Bible reminds us that we all commit sins and fall short of His glory (Romans 3:23). These are sobering thoughts.

At the same time, what is clear is that, to some extent, all of us think we understand. We think we have the right interpretation. As believers, we may feel that our views are correct. Yet we cannot help but read God’s conclusions that no one really understands.

This is a warning against excessive confidence and pride. It is a reminder that none of us is perfect, and there always is much we can learn (1 Corinthians 13:12). This is true when we are baby believers and it is true if we feel advanced in our spiritual maturity. It is true regardless of how long we might have known the Lord.

In your life, seek to stay humble before the Lord, and be on guard against pride. Remember how much we all need continually to seek God for His insight and perspective. How much we need His understanding. Regardless of how much you know, remember that there is much more He can reveal, about yourself, the world, and His Word.
