Distracted

“No soldier in active service entangles himself in the affairs of everyday life, so that he may please the one who enlisted him … likewise … an athlete, he is not crowned as victor unless he competes according to the rules.” —2 Timothy 2:4–5 NASB

Many desire to become a Navy Seal but few succeed. (Seal comes from their commitment to Sea, Air, and Land.)

Those passing the initial application must undergo a rigorous training program that takes at least 30 months. Most fall out; only about a quarter of those who enter the program become Seals. The result is an elite force, among the most respected military organizations in the world.

What makes a successful Seal? One recruit described the moment he began to realize what was required. It came during a personal interview with the commander, who silently stared at the recruit for ten minutes. Realizing he was being tested, the recruit began to grasp the extraordinary discipline he would need.

When the commander finally spoke, he asked, “What do you stand for?” He wasn’t interested in clichés or what others thought but his “rock-bottom beliefs.”

The message? Aspiring Seals need to know what they believe, their gifts, and the part they play. They learn that even the best Seals can get distracted, and they need to learn to focus with intensity.

The Bible reminds us how easily believers can be distracted and how much we need to focus and know what we believe. Ask God to give you clarity about your calling. Ask for a heart of service, not entangled with distractions, but focused on the Gospel.
