Distorting History

Daily Devotional2 Minutes

Distorting history shows how truth can be twisted—then and now—and why grounding your beliefs in God’s Word is more essential than ever.

“They gave a large sum of money to the soldiers, and said, ‘You are to say, “His disciples came by night and stole Him away while we were asleep.’”Matthew 28:12–13 NASB

For a time, Antony and Octavian had been partners in a triumvirate that ruled Rome. But while preparing for war with the Parthians, Antony fell in love with Cleopatra, the powerful ruler of Egypt, with whom he cultivated his own alliance. After being defeated by the Parthians, Antony then lost to the forces of Octavian, and both he and Cleopatra committed suicide.

Capturing the world’s imagination, this story has been retold for 2,000 years. But few realize that the facts were distorted. Octavian ordered the destruction of thousands of documents, so only the records that supported his version of events remained. So, history reflects his interests, not the whole picture.

The same kind of distortion took place a few years later when the chief priests wanted to shape public opinion and prevent people from knowing that Jesus had risen from the dead. They bribed soldiers to spread a false story, which many believed.

Examples of this kind of distortion fill history. Today, through films, books, websites, and TV programs, people still attempt to shape others’ opinions about the Bible, Jesus, and the Christian faith.

How can you know what is fact or fiction? Make Jesus your Lord, and seek an intimate relationship with Him. Seek His wisdom and the discernment of the Holy Spirit. Don’t allow the world to shape your opinions, but stand on the truth of God’s Word.

Reflection Question: Where are you tempted to believe cultural distortions over God’s truth?

Prayer
Heavenly Father, help me to be alert to distortions and lies in the world. Lead me by Your Spirit, and keep me from compromising. In Jesus’ name, amen.
