Deeper, Deeper

Deeper, Deeper

On the surface, Charles P. Jones seemed to be a successful pastor. But Jones, who was born in Georgia on this day in 1865, became dissatisfied with his own walk. He also saw how other Christians seemed content with a shallow faith. As he studied the Scriptures, he realized that God offered a depth he had never experienced.

He developed a hunger for more of God. A desire to experience more of His power, to understand more of His Word, to be more like Jesus. After times of fasting and prayer, he gradually experienced change. Jones began calling on other Christians to follow his example, to seek a deeper life.

In 1900, he wrote a hymn, “Deeper, Deeper,” that described his desire. He wrote, “Deeper, deeper in the love of Jesus daily let me go; higher, higher in the school of wisdom, more of grace to know.”

Wanting to become wiser in God’s Word, he cried out for more of the Spirit, desiring to become “wholly lost in Jesus,” and totally committed to do “His perfect will.” He knew that this could “cost hard trials,” but this did not stop him. His passion was to grow deeper.

Today, many believers are content with just some of what God offers. They don’t realize the depths He has prepared, and the rewards of digging deeper (and being wholly committed).

Are you content with your walk with the Lord? Do you desire to go deeper? Through His Spirit, you can experience more depths. Don’t hold back. Dedicate your life to Him. Seek to go deeper than ever before.
