Deception

King David knew how easily we are impacted by what other people say and do. Some treat with contempt those who try to serve God, responding to “honor” with “reproach.” Instead of acting with integrity and respect, people in every area of life “love what is worthless” and “aim at deception.”

It can be discouraging to see how some people act toward Christians. But the Bible encourages us to focus not on what people say and do, but on God. David wrote, “Tremble and do not sin” (v. 4). This means doing the right thing, by loving God and other people. David encourages us to “meditate in your heart upon your bed, and be still.” This means filling our minds and hearts with His Word through prayer and meditation.

Instead of being dominated by worldly thoughts, we need to develop a more intimate relationship with God. As David recognized, “Know that the LORD has set apart the godly man for Himself” (v. 3). We must be confident that God listens to us, for “the LORD hears when I call to Him.”

When we experience criticism, rejection, ridicule, or failure, we may be inclined to feel hopeless and overwhelmed. Instead, as David prayed, we need to look to God: “Lift up the light of Your countenance upon us, O LORD!” We are to “offer the sacrifices of righteousness, and trust in the LORD” (v. 5).

Do you have doubts? Are you facing problems you feel are too great to handle? Have you felt deceived or rejected?

Don’t be discouraged. Follow David’s advice: Call upon God. Remember all that He has done for you. As David testified, “You have put gladness in my heart” (v. 7). He will fill you with peace and confidence!
