Deceitful Spirits

Daily Devotional2 Minutes

“The Spirit expressly says that in later times some will depart from the faith by devoting themselves to deceitful spirits and teachings of demons, through the insincerity of liars whose consciences are seared.”—1 Timothy 4:1–2 ESV

It was a critical trend, threatening to shake the commitment of believers. Paul wanted to be sure Timothy was on the alert. To stress its importance, he added the word expressly. What was so important? “In later times some will depart from the faith.”

Paul warned that people will be deceived into deserting the Christian faith, turning their back on the Savior, and forsaking beliefs they once had.

Instead of believing the Bible and trusting God, they devoted themselves to deceitful spirits. These forces misled others so effectively that they would convince Christians to forsake the truth and believe lies.

Paul warned that some Christians would depart from the truth by devoting themselves to the “teachings of demons.” These believers would be deceived with misleading information from insincere people, “liars whose consciences are seared.”

These trends continue in our time. Even today, some depart from the faith and yield their minds and hearts to the influence of “deceitful spirits,” embracing misinformation spread by Satanic forces.

This is what the Spirit expressly said would happen. We need to be careful and sure of what we believe. Be prepared for people who would mislead and deceive us. Be alert and ready.

Reflection Question: How can you become more discerning to combat deception?
