People to Avoid

The Bible warns us that “there is a kind of man” who we should avoid, if possible. How can we recognize such people? First, they primarily think about themselves. This is clear from the way they approach life. They are “lofty” in their own eyes, and look arrogant. Blind to their own their weaknesses, they are quick to justify themselves, and blame others.

Instead of being humble and pliable, they are proud and defiant. Instead of listening to criticisms or be willing to admit their flaws and needs, they seem willing to rationalize everything. They are so self-centered that they always are pure in their own eyes. They are “not washed from his filthiness.”

They are not grateful but tend to take other people for granted. In fact, they are quick to criticize or judge others. And they can be nasty and harsh in their criticism.

The Bible provides this warning in part so we will not be like them. But we also need to be careful about developing relationships with them, or relying on them.

Where we do find such people? They are everywhere. We might find them in the workplace. In our neighborhoods. On television talk shows, and speeches from entertainers. In social media posts filled with venomous gossip. Even in churches, spreading discontent and division.

If we seek God’s blessing, we will not “stand in the path of sinners” or “sit in the seat of scoffers!” We will be careful who we will listen to for advice and “not walk in the counsel of the wicked.” We will not imitate these critics but fill our minds and hearts with His Word (Psalm 1:1-3).
