Continuity

This could have been a time for anxiety and speculation. The Israelites were about to enter the Promised Land. It would be a new era, with a whole series of changes and unknowns. All this was taking place at a time when they would have a new leader, Joshua.

Many Israelites might have struggled with questions: What would be the impact of having a different leader? Could they count on him? Would he know what to do?

During this time of transition, God made clear that there might have been a leadership change, but for all practical purposes, nothing would change. Why? Because He still was with them. This continuity was possible because Joshua had been trained for leadership. As Moses’ personal assistant, he helped lead the Israelites into battle and spent time with Moses in God’s presence.

Moses personally assured Joshua that God would be with him. That Joshua could trust in Him, and that He would show him what to do. Then God Himself delivered that same message to Joshua. Among his first acts as the new leader, Joshua confirmed promises made by Moses. The people were reassured and went forward with confidence.

Continuity is an important Biblical principle. Although our environment constantly changes, the Bible reminds us that God never changes (Malachi 3:6). That “Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever” (Hebrews 13:8).

Today, remember that God never changes. That His plans never change. That He constantly is with you. That His promises always are true, for you!
