Consistency

Aware of the actions of the surrounding nations, God’s people must have been eager for Him to bring judgment. They must have cheered, hearing the warnings given by Amos. Knowing the transgressions each nation had committed, He promised the appropriate response.

Then, perhaps to their surprise, God delivered the same essential message to both Judah and Israel. He would act against their neighbors. But this did not excuse His people for the sin in their lives.

The consistency of His response was a reminder that He has the same response to sin. To unfaithfulness. He is God and has eternal standards that do not change. His own people could not point a finger at others and expect God to overlook their own mistakes. They had no excuse. They should have known that they would be held accountable for their actions.

He knew that they had rejected His laws and spoken lies which “led them astray.” They had done the wrong things. They had not shown mercy but “pant after the very dust of the earth on the head of the helpless” (Amos 2:7). They had been filled with pride and profaned His holy name.

The Bible reminds us that God does not delight in judgment. In fact, He offers forgiveness and mercy for all. But we cannot go in, repeating our sins, and expect His blessings.

These are reminders that God loves us. He also is eager to forgive our sins and restore us when we go astray. But we also must remember that His standards never change. And that we, too, will Reap what we Sow (Galatians 6:7).

Today, seek to be serious about your relationship with Him, always seeking to please Him.
