Confident in God’s Plans

The clouds of war were gathering, and the thoughts of Sir Charles Villiers Stanford turned to Habakkuk. Born in Ireland on this day in 1852, Stanford had become one of the most influential composers and music teachers of his generation. He also was an outstanding organist and conductor. One of his focuses was writing music for the church, and many of his works still are performed.

With thoughts dominated by the threat of war, Stanford turned to the words of the prophet Habakkuk for one of his most powerful compositions, “For lo, I will Raise Up.” Stanford attempted to articulate his hope for Britain’s future through the analogy of Habakkuk’s prophecies.

Musically he displayed Habakkuk’s picture of the approach of galloping horses. In the face of enemies and danger, they could have hope with the realization that they could turn to God, that they could trust in Him.

For all who believed in Him, there was a sense of destiny, and the assurance that “the earth shall be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the Lord.” While going through the challenges of life, they could rest in the assurance that “the Lord is in his holy temple.”

Through the words of the Bible, Stanford shaped music that spoke to the people of his time. And these words continue to speak to us. No matter what is going on in the world, we can trust in God. No matter the concerns of our hearts, God continues to reign. For a short season it can appear that darkness might prevail. But the Bible promises that He knows everything that is taking place and that His plans are sure.

Today, commit any challenges you face to God. Let Him give you His peace. And seek to bring Him glory through your life.
