Commitment to Truth

“Jesus kept silent. And the high priest said to Him, ‘I adjure You by the living God, that You tell us whether You are the Christ, the Son of God.’ Jesus said to him, ‘You have said it yourself.’” Matthew 26:63-64 NASB

The Bible has many examples of commitments confirmed by swearing oaths to something (or someone) held in reverence, though we also are warned about unwise oaths (Matthew 5:34, James 5:12). In modern times, many have sworn an oath on the Bible. Reflecting the reverence in which it was held, the assumption that, by swearing on the Bible, a person would not even consider not telling the truth.

Oaths were important during the American Revolution, when many affairs required absolute secrecy. For example, Boston’s Provisional Congress on the Committee for Safety kept activities confidential by requiring members to swear an oath on a Bible in every meeting.

One of the few who knew the identity of committee members was Dr. Benjamin Church, (who also served as a delegate to the Continental Congress). Yet, amazingly, throughout this time Church actually was spying for the British.

History is filled with examples of people who lied in the context of serving what, for them, were higher causes. But what is unusual about Dr. Church is that he willingly lied after solemnly swearing on the Bible. Obviously, he valued his political goals more highly than the Bible.

When confronted with a similar situation, Jesus remained silent until the high priest challenged him to tell them “by the living God” whether He was “the Christ, the Son of God.” Under these conditions, Jesus confirmed the statement, even though His confirmation may have cost His life.

Every day, you have opportunities to demonstrate your standards. Are you committed to the truth? Can others trust your word? Do you keep your promises?

Remember, Satan is “the father of lies” (John 8:44) but Jesus is the “way, the truth, and the life” (John 14:6). Show your commitment to Him by being committed to truth, and God’s Word.

Prayer: Father, purify my heart. Help me to speak the truth in love. Help me to impact others with my testimony. Thank You for loving me! In Jesus’ name. Amen.
