Building God’s House

Daily Devotional2 Minutes

Building God’s House reminds us that serving Him brings opposition. Stay strong in faith, resist distractions, and focus on His mission.

“‘Let us build with you, for like you, we seek your God’ […] But Zerubbabel … said to them, ‘You have nothing in common with us in building a house to our God; but we ourselves will together build for the Lord God of Israel.’”Ezra 4:2–3 NASB

The Jews had returned to Jerusalem to rebuild the Temple of God. But their enemies harassed them and were dedicated to preventing their goal.

These scheming enemies tried to infiltrate their ranks and weaken their efforts. But Zerubbabel recognized their evil intentions and rejected their requests.

Next, the enemies sought to spread fear and discouragement, so the workers would take their minds off God’s mission. They hired counselors to “frustrate their advice” (v. 5), seeking to make the Jews feel inadequate and conclude the task was hopeless. Finally, they began spreading rumors and lies.

Each ordeal brought a temptation to get off track. But they resisted their enemies’ efforts, and the Temple was successfully rebuilt.

Anyone who desires to serve God can expect opposition. When these same kinds of attacks and distractions come your way, you must be ready. God’s enemies may target you by seeking to discourage, confuse, mislead, mock, or spread rumors about you.

These attacks may be subtle or direct. They may target you financially, relationally, mentally, emotionally, physically, or spiritually.

Fill your life with God’s Word, and refuse to waver in your convictions. Devote yourself to prayer and listening to God’s voice. Focus on completing the assignments He’s given you. Don’t give in to deception, but be bold and stand strong.

Reflection Description: How can you stay focused on what God has called you to do?
