Blazing New Trails

“Thus I aspired to preach the gospel, not where Christ was already named, so that I would not build on another man’s foundation.”
Romans 15:20 NASB

Many scholars feel that Johann Sebastian Bach was the most accomplished musician in history. Yet, in many ways, his third son, Carl Phillip Emmanuel, may have been more influential and even more “important.”

C.P.E. Bach, who was born on this day in 1714, became known throughout Europe as the “Great Bach.” He wrote many acclaimed works for the church, as well as influential keyboard pieces. While admiring his father, he was determined to explore uncharted waters in music. His innovations included many of the theories behind a musical form that was developing at the time, called the “symphony.”

While Johann wrote music of enormous complexity and intellectual power, C.P.E. Bach explored the realm of emotions in music. He wanted his music to “touch the heart” and “awaken the passions.” The result was music that often was daring and inventive, and that became an enormous influence on composers such as Haydn and Mozart.

It can be easy to be a follower, but it is much harder to be an innovator like C.P.E. Bach. Yet, in the spiritual realm, many Believers are content just to be followers, going along with the crowd, afraid of stepping out. Worried about being “different.”

The Bible urges us to realize that each of us is unique in God’s sight. That He has given every person special gifts and talents, and different goals. We are to be like Paul, committed not to repeat what others had done, but willing to blaze new trails and take on new challenges.

Today, ask God to give you a spirit of boldness. Don’t be afraid to take on new challenges. Have faith that God will equip you, and provide everything you need. Be willing to step out in faith and blaze new trails!

Prayer: Father, free me from limitations, and give me a spirit of boldness. Open my mind to receive more of Your insights and wisdom. I will follow You wherever You lead. In Jesus’ name. Amen.
