The Beginning of Knowledge

Herbert George (H.G.) Wells was a man who focused on the future. In fact, he gained fame in the late 19th century by writing futuristic novels that painted a dark picture of the world in which he lived. Wells developed this worldview after studying biology and becoming convinced that society would evolve into higher forms. He expressed this belief in books such as A Modern Utopia.

Although the outbreak of World War I crushed his confidence in progress, Wells later concluded that people could progress if they would adapt to changing circumstances through knowledge and education. He once wrote, “Human history becomes more and more a race between education and catastrophe.” But, with the outbreak of World War II, his confidence in the future was once again shaken.

Many today are like H.G. Wells, placing their hopes on human progress, education, and science. But the Bible reminds us that all of us are in fact frail and imperfect. Our only real hope is to trust in God. Real knowledge comes only when we fear Him. Only when God is first in our lives can He give us His wisdom.

When we fear God, we gain His perspective. We realize that He is our Creator. We no longer live under the illusion that we can be perfect or solve our problems. We realize that “all have sinned and come short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23).

Today, God promises you His peace, hope and joy. He is ready to reveal more of His wonders and insights. If you want more of God and His knowledge, make Him first in your life. Worship Him. Others may fail you, but you can trust in Him. His promises are true!
