Authority

Authority

Before Jesus departed for heaven, He gave His disciples clear directions about their priorities and goals. He wanted them to understand that, even after He went into heaven, “all authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth” (v. 18). He was not just giving them a little influence but all authority.

They were not just to be passive about this knowledge but put this authority into action. He said they were to “go.” There was work to be done. There were souls to be saved. Lives that needed help. Families that were falling apart. Marriages that were breaking down. Children who were drifting into sin.

Jesus would go on to teach them that they couldn’t accomplish these things on their own. They would need the power of His Spirit (Acts 1:8).

The Bible assures us that God has a plan and a calling for each believer. We can’t do this work in our own strength. We need His Spirit. His direction, power, and wisdom. To operate with His blessing, and the authority He has given us.

Jesus said, “As the Father has sent Me, I also send you” (John 20:21). He was letting us know that He was giving us the same authority which His father had given Him. It is our responsibility to “go,” as He leads.

In your life, remember that He is with you today and “even to the end of the age” (v. 20). Surrender your life anew to Him. Be ready to “go” and impact this world with the Gospel.
