Attraction

There was something about David—something so strong and vivid that men from many backgrounds were willing to risk everything to join his army and make him king. What was the secret of this attraction? David might have been a dynamic, charismatic leader, respected because of his military victories. But there was a deeper answer.

Ultimately, what attracted people to David was that God was with him. This perspective was given by Amasai. Inspired by the Spirit, he explained why so many people enthusiastically joined David: “We are yours, O David; and with you, O son of Jesse!…For your God is the one who helps you” (v. 18, NRSV).

Truly, everything changes when God is with us and people can see the results of His favor in our lives. People are drawn to us when they witness how God has transformed us and manifested His power in our lives.

Moses had this kind of transformation after he spent time with God. His face radiated such a glow that he needed a veil (Exodus 34:33-35).

When Peter and John stood before the Jewish leaders, they realized something was different about these men. Even though they were “uneducated and untrained,” their behavior puzzled and amazed these leaders. But they soon recognized the reason: Peter and John had “been with Jesus” (Acts 4:13).

Ask yourself if there’s something unmistakably different about your life. Can others tell that you have “been with Jesus”? Don’t be content with superficial religion or just going through the motions.

Spend time with Jesus. Talk with Him, and listen to His voice. Fellowship with Him and worship Him. Read His Word. Let Him transform you by His presence. Then, let your light shine (Matthew 5:16), so that others can see how you’ve been transformed.
